Lessons in Leadership Training: What Makes a Great Leader?

What does it take to be an enigmatic and effective leader? Great leaders throughout history have been recognized to be good, charismatic communicators. They are an inspiration to their followers. They also have outstanding organizational skills. Modern examples include heads of states, business leaders, and chairs of organizations.

Being a good leader requires a simple set of attributes, but this is easier said than done. When leadership seminars have not been introduced yet, leaders were said to be born and destined for greatness. However, in modern times, with the aid of training and dedication, every individual can be a great leader and succeed in life.

Training comes in different forms that are suited to different kinds of people. A person’s leadership style is unique and ranges from managerial, role model, to coach or mentor method.

Although the attributes of every leader are similar, the methods of training a good leader are different.

Leadership training and development focuses on the basic abilities needed by every leader. Communication skills are essential so that one can easily motivate his people, as well as become assertive when necessary. Leadership is defined as a two-way procedure that demands communication between a leader and his followers. Therefore, a leader should treat his followers as though they were his own friends and colleagues, but at the same time, he should know when and how to instill discipline in them.

Military leadership development programs take their roots from the lessons taken by war veterans and are applied to scenarios which are similar to fighting in a war. In the battlefield, a leader must have effective planning, organizational skills, and be flexible to adjust to any sudden changes that are typical in a war. In peaceful times, this form of leadership training is excellent for aspiring leaders who can work under pressure and be quick enough to adapt to new things.

An executive leadership training program takes into account that leaders have to be healthy to lead. A leader should be fit to lead. He should follow a healthy diet because a healthy leader is one who does his job well. An unhealthy leader, on the other hand, tends to be absent often, affecting team or organization efficiency. Aside from the leadership and character skills, a healthy lifestyle is also the key to being a great leader. It is also one of the most important things taught in leadership training.
